STORAGE COSTS, UNPACKED
There are many reasons for using self-storage and what’s stored varies from unit to unit. Yet whether the need is personal or for business, if you’re a student or in the armed forces, taking into consideration the cost, location, access, security, size and convenience of the facility are hugely important when deciding whether or not to use self-storage.
While there are many benefits from using a self-storage facility, choosing the right company will make the whole storage process easier and better value for money.
Additional costs can quickly add up so knowing what you want from a facility, what a company offers and how this compares to others is the first step to successful storage.
To help you figure out what you need and who to store with, we’ve explained what your options are and how much it will cost.
In a nutshell, the cost of storage is based on size (square footage to be precise) and the bigger the space, the lower the cost per square foot. For example, to store in an average 50 square foot unit you’d be looking at spending £140 per calendar month (pcm), which is £2.80 per square foot. If you were to go bigger, while the total cost would be more, the cost per square foot would be less.
As the unit cost depends on the size you’re wanting to use, it’s important to understand from the beginning how much space you need and how long you think you’ll want it so you can make the right calculation and budget accordingly.
At Store More, we offer units from 25sqft to 200sqft. To give you an idea about how the size of a unit translates to how much it can store, a 50sqft unit could fit about 100 Store More medium storage boxes, the contents of an average one bedroom flat or roughly one Transit van load of items.

What do you get for your money?
While we’ve covered unit size options and the associated cost variations, size isn’t all that should be considered when choosing which company to store with. Think about what you’re getting for your money – what do all the different companies have to offer as basic or additional benefits?
We suggest considering the following:
- The place
Think about the facility as a whole – is it in a good state? Are the units free of damp? Are they climate controlled? Are there members of staff on-site at any time? Is the location easy for you to get to at different times of day? Is this somewhere you’d be happy to leave your items? Is the facility on one level or do you have to access units via stairways or lifts? Is there parking available and can you get your vehicle close to the unit?
- The company
Cheap isn’t always the best. Sometimes, paying a bit more for a company you know you can trust is a price worth paying. Does the company you’re considering have a good reputation? What do its customers say about it? Does it have a Trust Pilot / Feefo rating? What are the staff like? Are they on site and willing to help? Do they give you confidence that they’re knowledgeable?
- The location and access
Where your storage is located can have a big impact on how much time you’re spending on travelling there – something especially important if you’re going to need more regular access. Think about the route to get there and how far you’re willing to travel. Plus, check whether there are any restrictions on when you can access the storage. If it’s 24-hour access, is it always free or is there a charge for accessing it at certain hours?
There are two things to think about with safety: are your items going to be safe if you leave them stored here and will you feel safe accessing the unit day or night? Check whether the units are individually alarmed and have a look around the facility first to see how you feel about being there.
It’s crucial to make sure your items are insured while they’re in storage. Regardless of the company you choose to store with, even at the most state-of-the-art facilities things can go wrong so making sure your items are insured is important for peace of mind. While many companies will include insurance as part of the storage fee, this isn’t the same everywhere so make sure you check what’s included and what level of cover they offer (be sure to read the small print). If insurance isn’t included, check what level is required by the company and price this up before you commit to any storage.
- What you’re storing
If you’re storing large items like furniture, it’s often a case of just moving each piece into the storage space and perhaps covering it with a sheet or wrap if you’re adding additional items on top to maximise your space. But other, smaller items will need to be boxed and ideally stacked so you can get the most out of your space. Do you have boxes already or will you need to buy them? This is important to think about not only to include in your budgeting but thinking about where you’ll get the boxes from so you can plan in advance.
Finding the best storage company for your items can be a big relief, but don’t forget to think about how you’ll get your items there in the first place! Will the items fit in your car? Will you have to do more than one trip? If you don’t have the vehicle to do the job, check whether the facility has a van you can use and whether there is an additional cost.
Most reputable storage companies will advise on what storage lock you’ll need for your unit. This is usually something you’ll need to buy and many facilities will sell the appropriate locks. Make sure you get the right type as this could affect your insurance. The Store More units in Hull require a 40/50mm lock, which are available to buy from our site. These locks slot into the door catch to secure it in place and which you hold the key for.
Check whether the storage company requires a deposit payment and what the terms are. In most cases, company’s require a deposit equal to half a month’s rent but check first as this may vary. Also, some may offer a no deposit incentive.
- Rental period
While you’re considering how long you’ll need the facility for, be sure to check if there is a minimum rental period and whether you can increase the length of time you’re storing for if you need to extend.
- Unit size
While all of the above is important – make sure the storage company you want to use has the size unit you need and that there is availability when you need it. Also, it’s worth checking whether you can size up or down if your storage needs change.
Special offers and deals
We all love a bargain and feeling like we’ve bagged a deal can make things feel better, especially when paying for an expense you’d rather not have. Many storage companies will offer deals as an incentive for new customers.
At Store More we offer 50% off the first eight weeks of your storage.
While a company’s offers are often genuinely a saving and helpful in bringing the cost down, being cautious and clear on what’s being offered and how the pricing is set out is advised. Pay attention particular to whether prices are listed by week or month. While there may only be a few days difference, the impact on the price shouldn’t be ignored.
With all this in mind, think about what is important to you when it comes to your storage, how much it will cost and what value you’ll get for your money. At Store More, we’ve made storage simple and easy for our customers.
